Teen Driving Safety School

MSR Houston’s Driving Program is committed to maximizing drivers’ skills to maximize their safety, bringing their skill level up to that of the car so they can be in safe in all situations they may encounter.

Our Teen Driving Safety School is an experience beyond driver's education that gives novice and beginning drivers the opportunity to experience extreme situations in a controlled environment.

The primary emphasis of this school is a "hands-on" driving experience that can teach students many aspects of how to control a car safely in real-world situations. This is not a course to learn how to drive at high speeds. Car control, accident avoidance, and spatial awareness are the primary objectives.

Qualified, licensed instructors are monitoring and riding with the student throughout the entire day. The class sizes are small (6 to 12) to keep the student to instructor ratio low, allowing for an abundance of one-on-one training. In this class, mistakes are learning experiences that are built on and corrected. In this course, students are also taught the dynamics of the physical limitations of their vehicles, as well as their own personal limits.

In the classroom, we teach driving basics such as seating position, mirror placement, proper vision and awareness. We cover vehicle dynamics and car control before putting the students behind the wheel for the hands-on portion of the day.

After the classroom session, students are taken to the skid pad area to focus on recognizing skids, reacting properly, and vehicle control during a skid situation. Challenging courses are created on an autocross course, closed cone-course, to allow the students to experience a vehicle’s dynamics and to learn how to maintain better vehicular control, utilizing these dynamics in various controlled situations.

We then move to a spatial awareness exercising, teaching the students to be aware of their surroundings. We combine this knowledge with that learned on the autocross and have the student drive the course in reverse.

In the threshold braking drill, teens learn to maximize their anti-lock brake system (ABS) or non-ABS system in order to stop their cars as quickly as possible in a controlled manner.

Participants learn accident avoidance by utilizing their maximum braking skills to slow the car and then partially releasing the brakes to drive around a stopped vehicle or object directly in their path while maintaining control of their vehicle.

It is our goal for them to walk away having learned something while enjoying the experience. Check our calendar for the next Teen Safety School or call the office at 281-369-0677.
